Delayed Harvest & Large Stocked Trout Streams in the Shenandoah ValleyAnglers are now reporting hatches of beatis mayflies on overcast days that are prompting the trout to feed on the drys on the surface and on the emergers headed to the surface. We're hearing about good action on Passage Creek, The Smith River at Bassett and Big Stoney Creek downstream of Wakeman's Grove. On snowy, drizzly overcast days look for feeding trout in the tails of the large pools. If you see delicate dimple rises these trout are feeding on the natural adults on the surface. Fish these trout one on one with a Beatis Parachute 18 or a Mr. Rapidan Parachute 18 on a 6X Classic Leader. If you see splashy feeders these trout are feeding on the beatis emergers headed for the surface of the stream to pop their wings. Fish for these trout with a Mr. Rapidan Soft Hackle Olive 18 by using either an upstream dead drift or an upstream presentation with a slow rod lifting action. Rod Testing Video Many of you have asked for information on how to select a new fly rod for the type fishing you plan to do. In order to help you on this we have just put a new video on our website which explains the way various fly rods perform in different types of flyfishing. |

Mountain Trout StreamsThe Brook Trout are spawning right now and their eggs will not hatch until early March. Please leave these fish alone until March. Many of these fish spawn in the easiest wading areas of the pool which only increases the odds of us stepping on thier redds. |
